Christopher Wren
Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS is one of the most renowned British architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, surveyor and mathematician-physicist. He was given the responsibility of rebuilding 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire of 1666, including his so-called masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, on Ludgate Hill, completed in 1710. The primary creative responsibility for some churches today is often delegated to others in his office, notably Nicholas Hawksmoor. Other notable buildings in Wren include Royal Chelsea Hospital, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and the south facade of Hampton Court Palace. The Wren Building, the main building of the College of William and Mary in Virginia, was given to Wren. Trained in Latin physics and Aristoteles at Oxford University, Wren was one of the founders of the Royal Society and his scientific work was highly regarded by Isaac Newton and Blaise Pascal.
