David Knopfler is an English singer and songwriter from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. He was born in Scotland and raised in England at the age of two. Together with his brother Mark Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers, he formed the rock band Dire Straits in 1977, playing the role of rhythm guitarist on their first two albums. After leaving the group, Knopfler embarked on a solo career as a recording artist. Knopfler initially created smaller labels, publishers and independent labels.
