Fannie Lou Hamer
Fannie Lou Hamer is an American women's rights and election activist, community organizer and leader of the civil rights movement. She is the co-founder and vice-president of the Liberal Democratic Party, which she represented in the 1964 National Democratic Congress. Hamer also hosted Mississippi Free Summer with the Nonviolent Student Coordinating Committee. She is also a co-founder of the National Women Poli Caucus, an organization created to recruit, train and support women of all races who wish to run for government elections. Hamer began his civil rights in 1962, until his health declined nine years later. She is known for her use of hymns and witty quotes and her tenacity in leading the Mississippi black women's civil rights movement. She was subjected to blackmail, threats, harassment, gunfire and assault by racists, including members of the police, as she attempted to register and exercise her right to vote.
