Honus Wagner
Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner, sometimes referred to as "Hans" Wagner, is an American baseball player who played 21 seasons in the Major League from 1897 to 1917, almost entirely for the Team. Pittsburgh pirates. Wagner won his eighth polishing title in 1911, a National League record that remains intact to this day, and was tied only once in 1997, by Tony Gwynn. He also led the tournament with six times and stole the base five times. Wagner has been nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman" because of its great speed and German heritage. This nickname is a nod to the fact that the famous folktale has been turned into another famous opera by another Wagner. In 1936, Baseball Fame Hall named Wagner one of its first five members. He received the second-highest total, behind Ty Cobb of 222, and tied Babe Ruth at 215. Most baseball historians consider Wagner the greatest conqueror of all time. Ty Cobb himself called Wagner "probably the greatest star to ever take a diamond".
