He has written more than 40 books, most of which are fictitious family sagas spanning the lives of generations in specific geographic locations and incorporating a detailed history. Michener has many of the bestselling works and books voted by the Book of the Month, and is known for the meticulous research behind the books. Michener's books include Tales of the South Pacific for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for the Book of Fiction in 1948, Hawaii, The Drifters, Centennial, The Source, The Fires of Spring, Chesapeake, Caribbean, Caravans, Alaska, Texas, Space and Poland, as well as the Toko-ri bridges. His non-fiction works include Iberia, on trips to Spain and Portugal; his memoir is titled Le monde est ma maison; and sports in America. Return to Paradise combines short fictional stories with realistic Michener depictions of the Pacific regions where they take place.
