Marion Shepilov Barry is an American politician who served as mayor of the District of Columbia from 1979 to 1991 and 1995 to 1999. A Democrat, Barry served three terms on District Council. Columbia, represented as a major member from 1975 to 1979 and at Quartier 8 from 1993 to 1995, and again from 2005 to 2014. In the 1960s, he participated in the civil rights movement, first as a member of the Nashville Student Movement, and then as the first chair of the Nonviolent Student Coordinating Committee. Barry is known nationally as the mayor of the nation's capital, the first famous civil rights activist to become the CEO of a major American city.
