Martin David Robinson, known professionally as Marty Robbins, is an American singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist, and NASCAR racer. Robbins was one of the most famous and successful western and country singers for much of his career spanning nearly four decades, from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Born in Glendale, Arizona, Robbins taught himself guitar while serving in the US Navy during World War II, then became famous in clubs in and around his home country. In 1956, he released his first country song number 1, "sing the Blues" and a year later, he released two more number 1 hits, "A White Sport Coat" and "The Story of My. Life ". In 1959, Robbins released his signature song, "El Paso", for which he won the Grammy Award for Best Western and Country Record. The song kicked off Robbins' association with Western balladery, a style that will become a staple of his career.
