Robert Venturi
Robert Charles Venturi Jr. is an American architect, founding director of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, and one of the great architectural figures of the twentieth century. Together with his wife and partner, Denise Scott Brown, he helped shape how architects, planners and students live and think about architecture and the built environment. Their buildings, plans, theoretical articles and teaching also helped broaden architectural discourse. Venturi received the Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 1991; The award was presented to him on his own, despite a request to include his counterpart, Scott Brown. Later, a group of women architects attempted to bring her name back to the prize, but the Pritzker Prize jury refused to do so. Venturi is also known for inventing the maxim “Less is a hole”, a postmodern antidote to Mies van der Rohe's famous modernist maxim “Less is more”.
