Albert Sidney Fleischman is an American author of children's books, screenplays, adult novels and non-fiction books on theater magic. His children's works are known for their humor, visuals, interesting storylines, and trails of American history. He won the Newbery Medal in 1987 for The Whipping Boy and the 1979 Boston Globe - Horn Book Prize for Humbug Mountain. For his contributions to a career as a children's writer, he was nominated in the United States for the biennial Hans Christian Andersen Prize in 1994. In 2003, the Association of Children's Book Writers and Artists inaugurated the Sid Fleischman Humor Award in honor of him and him as its first recipient. Awards are awarded each year to a children's or young adult funny novel author. He told his own story in The Abracadabra Kid: A Writer's Life.
