Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith II is an American gangster and American border fraudster. Smith runs trusted programs in the western United States and plays a major role in organized crime activity in Colorado and Alaska County. Smith is known for his "Bonus Soap Racket", in which he will sell bars of soap with bonuses hidden in the packaging of certain bars to increase sales. However, through his ingenuity, he ensured that only members of his gang could purchase the "prize" soap. The racquet led to its nickname "Soapy". The soap racket's success and other scams helped him fund three consecutive crime empires in Denver, Creede and Skagway, respectively. He was killed in a shooting at the Juneau harbor in Skagway on July 8, 1898 .
