He witnessed numerous battles throughout his 34-year career, fighting actions during the Black Hawk War, the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican-American War, the Utah War and American Civil War. Considered by President Jefferson Davis the best General of the Union before the subsequent arrival of Robert E. Lee, he was killed at the start of the Civil War at the Battle of Shilo on April 6, 1862. Johnston was the highest officer, the Union or the Union, killed during the war. Davis believed that General Johnston's loss "was a turning point in our destiny." Johnston had no relation to the Confederacy General Joseph E. Johnston.
