Ignatius of Loyola, proclaimed St. Ignatius of Loyola, was a Spanish Catholic priest and Basque theologian who, with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier, founded the congregation called the Society of Jesus and became first governor general in Paris in 1541. The Order of the The Jesuits devoted themselves to teaching and missionary work. Its members are bound by a special oath of obedience to the supreme pope to be ready to fulfill special papal missions. Society played an important role in the anti-reform era. Ignatius is noted as an inspiring spiritual director. He documented his method in a famous treatise called Mental Exercises, a collection of meditation, prayer, and other simple spiritual exercises, first published in 1548. It was known as the "Ignati Spirit". Ignatius was beatified in 1609 and canonized, enthroned on March 12, 1622. His feast is celebrated on July 31.
