Mary, Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, ruled Scotland from December 14, 1542 until she was forced to abdicate on July 24, 1567. Mary, the only surviving legal child of King James V of Scotland, was six days old when her father passed away and she ascended the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France when Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558 she married Dauphin of France, Francis. Mary was Queen Consort of France from the throne in 1559 until her death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, to Leith on August 19, 1561. Four years later, she married. kissed Henry Stuart's half brother, Lord Darnley, and in June 1566 they had one son, James. In February 1567, Darnley's residence was destroyed by an explosion and he was found murdered in the garden.

Because she was the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, she became Queen of Scotland at the age of six days. In 1567, she was imprisoned and compelled to relinquish her throne.
