Ntozake Shange is an American playwright and poet. As a black feminist, she has tackled Black's race and power issues for the majority of her work. She is known for her Obie-winning play, For Girls of Color which was once considered suicide / When the Rainbow was Enuf. She has also written novels including Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo, Liliane and Betsey Brown, about an African-American girl who is running away from her home. Among Shange's honors and awards are scholarships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Foundation, the American Poetry Association's Shelley Memorial, and the Stroller Prize. In April 2016, Barnard College announced that it had acquired the Shange Archives. Shange lives in Brooklyn, New York. Shange has one daughter, Savannah Shange. She has been married twice: to saxophonist David Murray and artist McArthur Binion, Savannah's father, both marriages ending in divorce.

African-American poet, author, and playwright best known for For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enough, a 1975 lyrical play. Betsey Brown, a novel she wrote in 1985, is another of her works.
