Born into an important Borgia family in Xativa in the Kingdom of Aragon, Rodrigo studied law at the University of Bologna. He was ordained a deacon and became a cardinal in 1456 after his uncle was elected Pope Callistus III, and a year later he became deputy minister of the Catholic Church. He continued to serve in the Curia under the next four Popes, gaining considerable influence and wealth in the process. In 1492, Rodrigo was elected pope, taking the name of Alexander VI. The bulls of Alexander VI in 1493 affirmed or reaffirmed the Spanish crown in the New World following the discovery of Christopher Columbus in 1492. During the Second Italian War, Alexander VI supported him, my son, Cesare Borgia, served as a servant of the King of France. The aim of his foreign policy is to achieve the most favorable conditions for his family.

A Renaissance pope whose reign was marred by nepotism and scandal, but who was also an accomplished diplomat and statesman. During his pontificate, he had Pinturcchio, Michelangelo, and Raphael work for him as patrons of the arts.
