Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, is an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its apparent clarity, ease of composition, and the visual realization of the great ideal of neoclassical man. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he formed the traditional trio of great masters of this period. Raphael is extremely productive, runs an unusually large workshop and, despite dying at the age of 37, leaves a big job. Many of his works are located in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms are the central and greatest work of his career. The most famous work is the School of Athens by Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican. After his early years in Rome, much of his work was made by his studio from his drawings, with a significantly reduced quality. He was very influential throughout his life, although outside of Rome, his work was best known for his collaborative printing.

Remembered best for his famous fresco The School of Athens, this important Italian artist of the High Renaissance also created numerous portraits, religious paintings, drawings, and prints. He was also an architect who designed the Chigi Chapel in Rome, Italy, as well as several other constructions.
