Sister Nivedita is an Irish teacher, author, activist, school founder and disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She spent her childhood and early teenage years in Ireland. She was engaged to marry a young Welshman, but he died shortly after their engagement. Sister Nivedita met Swami Vivekananda in 1895 in London and arrived in Calcutta, India in 1898. Swami Vivekananda gave her the name Nivedita when he changed her name to Brahmacharya on March 25, 1898. In November 1898, she opened a girls' school in the Bagbazar region of Calcutta. She wants to educate girls who don't even have access to basic education. During the 1899 Calcutta plague, Nivedita cared for and cared for the poor and sick. Nivedita is closely related to the newly created Ramakrishna mission. Due to her active contributions in the realm of Indian nationalism, she had to openly separate herself from the activities of the Ramakrishna mission under then president, Swami Brahmananda.
