Stanley Allen McChrystal is a retired US Army general best known for his position as Commander of the Joint Special Operations Command in the mid-2000s. His last position was Chief of Staff. United States - Afghanistan International Assistance Force and Commander. He served as Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from August 2008 to June 2009 and Commander of the JSOC from 2003 to 2008, where he is believed to have killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq, but has also been criticized for allegedly playing a cover-up with Pat Tillman friendly fire. McChrystal is known to have said what other military leaders thought but was not afraid to say; that was one of the reasons given for his appointment as head of all forces in Afghanistan. He held the post from June 15, 2009 to June 23, 2010. Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates describes McChrystal as "perhaps the best warrior and leader of men in the world."
