Clutch

A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages power transmission, especially from a drive shaft to a driven shaft. The clutch acts as a mechanical linkage between the engine and transmission; and briefly disconnects, or separates the engine from the Transmission system, and therefore the drive wheels, whenever the pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to smoothly change gears. In the simplest application, clutches connect and disconnect two rotating shafts. In these devices, one shaft is typically attached to an engine and other to power unit. While the other shaft provides output power for work and typically the motions involved are rotary, linear clutches are also possible. In a torque-controlled drill, for instance, one shaft is driven by a motor, and the other drives a drill chuck.

Top Facts You Did Not Know About Clutch

Clutch control - Clutch control refers to the act of controlling the speed of a vehicle with a manual transmission by partially engaging the clutch plate, using the clutch pedal instead of the accelerator pedal.. Clutch delay valve - A clutch delay valve is an automotive component added to the clutch system of an automobile to standardize clutch engagement speed. Its purpose is to engage the drive train of an automobile without introducing shock to the drive train components by engaging too quickly.. Coupling - A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both.. Dual-clutch transmission - A dual-clutch transmission is a type of multi-speed vehicle transmission system, that uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets. The design is often similar to two separate manual transmissions with their respective clutches contained within one housing, and working as one unit.. Dual mass flywheel - A dual-mass flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that is used to provide continuous energy in systems where the energy source is not continuous, the same way as a conventional flywheel acts, but damping any violent variation of torque or revolutions that could cause an unwanted vibration.. Freewheel - In mechanical or automotive engineering, a freewheel or overrunning clutch is a device in a transmission that disengages the driveshaft from the driven shaft when the driven shaft rotates faster than the driveshaft. An overdrive is sometimes mistakenly called a freewheel, but is otherwise unrelated.. Clutches.. Automotive transmission technologies.
