Jan Nisar Akhtar is an Indian poet of Urdu ghazals and nazms, and part of a movement of progressive writers who is also a lyricist for Bollywood. He is the son of Muztar Khairabadi and the great-grandson of Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi His career spanned four decades during which he worked with composers such as C. Ramchandra, OP Nayyar, N Dutta and Khayyam and wrote 151 songs. Among them are songs from his escape film, Yasmin from AR Kardar, Aankhon hi Aankhon Mein from CID by Guru Dutt, Yeh dil aur unai nigahon ke saaye from Prem Parbat and Aaja re from Noorie and the song. His last song, Ae Dil- e-naadaan, in Razia Sultan by Kamal Amrohi. His poetic works include Nazr-e-Butaan, Salaasil, Javidaan, Pichali Pehar, Ghar Angan, and Khaak-e-dil. Then there is a book of poems for which he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Prize in 1976 in Urdu by Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Literature of India.

He is an Indian poet and Bollywood lyricist best known for his Urdu nazms and ghazals. He is mainly known for writing the poetry"Khaak-e-dil" in 1973. (From the Ashes of the Heart).
