He started working with his father, Nathan Gittelmacher, who is also a photographer. Since 1950, he has photographed all the prime ministers of Israel. He received the Photographer of the Year Award from Professional Photographers of Canada in 1968, 1969 and 1973. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Professional Photographers, a Fellow of the British Royal Photography Association and a Fellow of America. Association of Photographers. In 1989, he was recognized as a Member of the Order of Canada for being “a master portrait painter”. Her son, Michael Gilbert, is also a photographer.
