Cotton Mather was a New England Puritan missionary, book author, and writer. One of the most important intellectual figures of English-speaking colonial America, Mather is remembered today mainly for his work Magnalia Christi Americana and other historical works, for his scientific contributions, he was in plant breeding and promoted inoculation as a means of other infectious diseases, and for his participation in the events surrounding the Salem witch trials in 1692–3. He also promoted the new Newtonian science in America and submitted numerous scientific papers to the Royal Society of London, which officially appointed him a colleague in 1723. A controversial figure of his day, he was unsuccessful in finding the presidency of Harvard University, which was held by his father Augmentation, another famous Puritan intellectual.
