David Souter
David Hackett Souter is a retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He served from October 1990 until his retirement in June 2009. Appointed by US President George H. W. Bush to fill the void that William J. Brennan Jr. was vacant, Souter sits at both the Rehnquist Courthouse and the Roberts Courthouse. Souter grew up in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and attended Harvard University; Magdalen College, Oxford; and Harvard Law School. After a short period of work in private practice, he moved to the public service. He was an attorney, in the office of the attorney general of New Hampshire, as attorney general of New Hampshire, as deputy attorney general of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire, as deputy attorney general of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire and briefly a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the trial cycle. Souter is appointed to the Supreme Court without a substantial "paper trail", but is believed to be a conservative judge.
