After being nominated five times for a Tony Award, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical Film twice: for her role as Fosca in Passion and for the role of Anna Leonowens in The King and I. Ruth Sherwood in Wonderful Town, Lotte Lenya in LoveMusik and Bubbie / Raisel in The People in the Picture. Murphy debuted the Broadway stage as a replacement for the musical They were playing our song in 1979. Her other stage credits include off-stage Broadway productions by Song of Singapore and Hello.
