She is known for her leading role in the Petticoat case, which occurred during her husband's service as Vice President of the United States. In this role, Ms. Calhoun led the wives of other Cabinet members to boycott Peggy Eaton, the wife of War Secretary John Eaton, whom they saw as a woman with a bad personality. The incident damaged the relationship between John C. Calhoun and President Andrew Jackson, and effectively put an end to any legitimate opportunity for him to become President of the United States.
