Ian Kevin Curtis is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is a singer and lyricist for the post-punk band Joy Division and has recorded two albums with the band: Unknown Pleasures and Closer. Curtis is known for his middle-low male voice, his dancing style and his writing is often filled with images of desolation, emptiness and alienation. Curtis suffered epilepsy and depression and committed suicide the night before the Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. His death leads to the disbandment of the group and the formation of the New Order that follows. Despite their short career, the Joy Division still has a significant influence. AllMusic's John Bush argues that they "became the top bands in the post-punk movement by ... not focusing on anger and energy but on mood and expression, showing the rise of the line. music replaces melancholy in the 80's.
