On July 20, 2019, in the London Diamond League, Ingebrigtsen broke Norway's national record in 5,000 meters with a time of 13: 02.03. His brothers Henrik and Filip are also international mid-range racers. They were trained by their father Gjert Ingebrigtsen. On October 12, 2019, he was the youngest heart rate athlete in Eliud Kipchoge's successful under 2 hour marathon effort. In 2021, Jakob is the 8th, 6th and 9th fastest man over 1500m, 2000m and 3000m respectively. He is also one of three men to make the Top 10 over three distances, the other two holding world records in 1500m, 1 mile and 2000m Hicham El Guerrouj and Algeria Noureddine Morceli.
