Johnny Hodges
Cornelius "Johnny" Hodges is an American alto saxophonist, best known for his solo work with the big band Duke Ellington. He played the main alto on the saxophone for many years. Hodges was also introduced to soprano saxophone, but refused to play soprano after 1946. He is considered one of the outstanding alto sax players of the big band era. After starting his career as a teenager in Boston, Hodges began to go to New York and perform with Lloyd Scott, Sidney Bechet, Luckey Roberts and Chick Webb. When Ellington wanted to expand his band in 1928, Ellington's clarinetist Barney Bigard suggested Hodges. His play has become one of the decisive voices of the Ellington Orchestra. From 1951 to 1955, Hodges left Duke to lead his own group, but returned just before Ellington's triumphant return - orchestral performance at the 1956. Newport Jazz Festival
