Oskar Wilhelm Fischinger is a German-American animator, filmmaker and abstract painter, famous for creating abstract musical animation decades before the advent of computer graphics and sound video. He created special effects for Fritz Lang's Woman on the Moon in 1929, one of the first science fiction rocket films, and was an influence on Disney's Fantasia. He has made more than 50 short films and painted around 800 oil paintings, many of which can be found in museums, galleries and collections around the world. Among his cinematographic works is Motion Painting No. 1, currently listed in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
