Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister was an English mid-range athlete and neuroscientist who ran the first four minutes or less. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Bannister set a British 1,500-meter record and finished fourth. This feat further strengthened his determination to be the first athlete to complete a one-mile race in less than 4 minutes. He completed this feat on May 6, 1954 on the Iffley Road in Oxford, with Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher as the speed providers. When announcer Norris McWhirter said "It was three minutes ...", cheers from the crowd overwhelmed Bannister's exact time, which was 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. He achieved this record with minimal training, while practicing as a junior doctor. Bannister's record lasted only 46 days. Bannister became a neuroscientist and teacher at Pembroke College, Oxford, before retiring in 1993.
