Thomas Hooker was a dominant figure in the early development of colonial New England. He was one of the great preachers of his time, a scholarly writer on Christian subjects, the Premier of Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the early settlers and founders of Hartford and state of Connecticut, and is considered by many as an inspiration. for "Connecticut's Basic Orders", which some have called the world's first written democratic constitution to establish representative government.
