William Seward Burroughs II is an American writer, visual artist, speech performer, and chaos wizard considered the main protagonist of Generation Beat and a major author of postmodern popular culture and literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and atlases, six short stories and four collections of essays, and five books were published on his interviews and correspondence. He also collaborates on projects and recordings with numerous performers and musicians and has appeared extensively in films. He is also known by the pseudonym William Lee. Burroughs has created and exhibited thousands of paintings and other visual works of art, including his famous “Shotgun Art”. Burroughs was born into a wealthy family in St. Mary's. Louis, Missouri. He is the grandson of inventor William Seward Burroughs I, who founded the Burroughs Group, and the grandson of public relations manager Ivy Lee.
