Adam Smith war ein schottischer Ökonom, Philosoph sowie Moralphilosoph, ein Pionier der politischen Ökonomie und eine Schlüsselfigur der schottischen Aufklärung, auch bekannt als The Father of Economics oder The Father of Capitalism. Smith schrieb zwei klassische Werke, The Theory of Moral Sentiments und An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Letzteres, oft abgekürzt als The Wealth of Nations, gilt als sein Hauptwerk und das erste moderne Werk der Ökonomie. In seiner Arbeit führte Adam Smith seine Theorie des absoluten Vorteils ein. Smith studierte Sozialphilosophie an der University of Glasgow und am Balliol College in Oxford, wo er als einer der ersten Studenten von Stipendien des Landsmanns John Snell profitierte. Nach seinem Abschluss hielt er eine erfolgreiche Reihe öffentlicher Vorlesungen an der University of Edinburgh, die ihn zur Zusammenarbeit mit David Hume während der schottischen Aufklärung führte.
