Alben William Barkley ist ein amerikanischer Anwalt und Politiker aus Kentucky, der in beiden Kammern des Kongresses diente und von 1949 bis 1953 der 35. Vizepräsident der Vereinigten Staaten war. 1905 wurde er zum McCracken County Attorney in Kentucky gewählt. Er wurde 1909 zum Bezirks- / Exekutivrichter und 1912 zum Vertreter der Vereinigten Staaten für den ersten Bezirk von Kentucky gewählt. Im Senat befürwortete er einen New-Deal-Ansatz zur Lösung der Weltwirtschaftskrise und wurde wegen Robinsons Tod im Jahr 1937 zum Nachfolger des Mehrheitsführers im Senat, Joseph T. Robinson, gewählt.
