Alexandre Bisson war ein französischer Dramatiker, Varieté-Schöpfer und Romanautor. Geboren in Briouze, Orne in der Basse-Normandie, war er sowohl in seiner Heimat Frankreich als auch in den USA erfolgreich. Als bedeutender Schöpfer des Pariser Varietés wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Edmond Gondinet Bissons Dreiakter-Komödie Un Voyage d'agrément von 1881 im Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris aufgeführt. Von seinen Werken ist Bisson am besten für sein Stück Madame X in Erinnerung geblieben, das 1910 sowohl in Paris als auch am Broadway mit Sarah Bernhardt in der Hauptrolle aufgeführt wurde. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde das Stück dreimal für den Broadway wiederbelebt und neun Madame-X-Filme in mehreren Sprachen wurden gedreht. Die erste Stummfilmadaption war 1916 und die letzte im Jahr 2000. Bekanntere Versionen sind ein Tonfilm von 1929 mit Ruth Chatterton und unter der Regie von Lionel Barrymore sowie der Film von 1966 mit Lana Turner. 2006 wurde in Chicago ein Musical nach dem Originalstück produziert.
