Aram Il'yich Khachaturian war ein sowjetisch-armenischer Komponist und Dirigent. Er gilt als einer der führenden sowjetischen Komponisten. Khachaturian wurde in Tiflis, der multikulturellen Hauptstadt Georgiens, geboren und wuchs dort auf. 1921 zog er nach der Sowjetisierung des Kaukasus nach Moskau. Ohne vorherige musikalische Ausbildung schrieb er sich am Gnessin Musical Institute ein und studierte anschließend am Moskauer Konservatorium unter anderem in der Klasse von Nikolai Myaskovsky. Sein erstes großes Werk, das Klavierkonzert, machte seinen Namen innerhalb und außerhalb der Sowjetunion bekannt. Es folgten das Violinkonzert und das Cellokonzert. Zu seinen weiteren bedeutenden Kompositionen zählen die Masquerade Suite, die Hymne der armenischen SSR, drei Symphonien und rund 25 Filmmusiken. Khachaturian ist am bekanntesten für seine Ballettmusik - Gayane und Spartacus. Sein beliebtestes Stück, der "Sabre Dance" von Gayane, wurde in der Populärkultur ausgiebig verwendet und von einer Reihe von Musikern weltweit gecovert.
