Herbert James "Burt" Munro war ein neuseeländischer Motorradrennfahrer, der dafür berühmt war, am 26. August 1967 in Bonneville einen Weltrekord unter 1.000 ccm aufzustellen. Dieser Rekord steht immer noch; Munro war 68 Jahre alt und fuhr eine 47 Jahre alte Maschine, als er seinen letzten Rekord aufstellte. Er arbeitete von seinem Haus in Invercargill aus und verbrachte 20 Jahre damit, das 1920er Indian-Motorrad, das er im selben Jahr gekauft hatte, stark zu modifizieren. Munro stellte 1938 seinen ersten neuseeländischen Geschwindigkeitsrekord auf und später sieben weitere. Er reiste, um an den Bonneville Salt Flats teilzunehmen und versuchte, Geschwindigkeitsweltrekorde aufzustellen. Bei seinen zehn Besuchen in den Salinen stellte er drei Geschwindigkeitsrekorde auf, von denen einer noch steht. Seine Bemühungen und sein Erfolg sind die Grundlage für den Film The World’s Fastest Indian mit Anthony Hopkins und einen früheren Kurzdokumentarfilm aus dem Jahr 1971 Burt Munro: Offerings to the God of Speed, beide unter der Regie von Roger Donaldson.
