Er ist der Sohn von Dory Funk und Bruder von Terry Funk und war der Promoter der Western States Sports Promotion in Amarillo, Texas. Ihm wird die Erfindung des Texas Cloverleaf Submission Hold zugeschrieben und er leitet das Funking Conservatory, eine professionelle Wrestling-Schule. Funk hielt einmal die NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. Er ist der zweitlängste amtierende NWA World Heavyweight Champion aller Zeiten und hält ihn seit über vier Jahren. Nur Lou Thesz hielt es länger. Er hielt auch einmal die WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship und einmal die CWA World Heavyweight Championship. Er ist ein 2009 in die WWE Hall of Fame aufgenommener. Er arbeitet für All Japan Pro Wrestling als Vorsitzender der Pacific Wrestling Federation.
