Francis Eugene George ist ein amerikanischer Kardinal der römisch-katholischen Kirche. Er ist der achte Erzbischof von Chicago und diente auch als Bischof von Yakima und Erzbischof von Portland, Oregon. Als Mitglied der Missionare der Mission der Unbefleckten Empfängnis wurde George 1998 von Papst Johannes Paul II. Zum Kardinal ernannt. Von 2007 bis 2010 war er Präsident der Katholischen Bischofskonferenz der Vereinigten Staaten. Am 20. September 2014 wurde Papst Franziskus akzeptierte Georges Rücktritt und ernannte Bischof Blase J. Cupich aus Spokane, Washington, als Nachfolger zum Erzbischof der Erzdiözese Chicago. Unter diesen ungewöhnlichen Umständen durfte George die derzeitige Position des Erzbischofs bis zu Cupichs Nachfolge am 18. November 2014 innehaben. Bei George wurde 2006 erstmals Krebs diagnostiziert und er starb an Krebs. Diese Krankheit im Jahr 2015.
