Fred Machetanz ist ein alaskischer Maler und Illustrator, der sich auf die Darstellung von alaskischen Szenen, Menschen und Wildtieren spezialisiert hat. Er kam 1935 zum ersten Mal in das Gebiet, als er nach Unalakleet reiste, um seinen Onkel Charles Traeger zu besuchen, der dort eine kommerzielle Station betrieb und zwei Jahre damit verbrachte, einen Katalog alaskischer Szenen zu entwickeln. Nachdem er Alaska verlassen hatte, verbrachte er einige Zeit als Illustrator in New York City, wollte aber nach Alaska zurückkehren. Er kehrte 1942 zurück, nachdem er sich freiwillig zur United States Navy gemeldet hatte, und bat darum, während des Zweiten Weltkriegs auf die Aleuten gebracht zu werden. Er wurde zum Zugführer und Geheimdienstoffizier im North Pacific Command befördert. Nach dem Krieg absolvierte er eine kurze Ausbildung an der Federation of Art Students in New York, studierte Lithografie bei Will Barnet und kehrte dann 1946 nach Unalakleet zurück.
