Giovanni Aldini war ein italienischer Arzt und Physiker, der in Bologna geboren wurde. Er war ein Bruder des Staatsmanns Graf Antonio Aldini. 1798 wurde er als Nachfolger seines Onkels Luigi Galvani Professor für Physik in Bologna. Seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten beschäftigten sich hauptsächlich mit Galvanismus, Anatomie und seinen medizinischen Anwendungen, mit dem Bau und der Beleuchtung von Leuchttürmen sowie mit Versuchen, menschliches Leben und materielle Gegenstände vor der Zerstörung durch Feuer zu bewahren. Er schrieb neben seiner Muttersprache Italienisch auf Französisch und Englisch und auf Latein, das noch im 18. Jahrhundert von der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft verwendet wird. In Anerkennung seiner Verdienste ernannte ihn der Kaiser von Österreich zum Ritter der Eisernen Krone und zum Staatsrat in Mailand, wo er starb. Er hinterließ eine beträchtliche Summe, um in Bologna eine naturwissenschaftliche Schule für Handwerker zu gründen.
