Henry Lewis Stimson ist ein US-amerikanischer Politiker, Rechtsanwalt und republikanischer Politiker. Während seiner langen Karriere wurde er zu einer führenden Persönlichkeit der amerikanischen Außenpolitik und diente sowohl in republikanischen als auch in demokratischen Regierungen. Er war Kriegsminister unter Präsident William Howard Taft, Außenminister unter Präsident Herbert Hoover und Kriegsminister unter den Präsidenten Franklin D. Roosevelt und Harry S. Truman. Als Sohn des Chirurgen Lewis Atterbury Stimson wurde Stimson nach seinem Abschluss an der Harvard Law School Anwalt an der Wall Street. Er war unter Präsident Theodore Roosevelt als Rechtsanwalt in den Vereinigten Staaten tätig und verfolgte eine Reihe von Kartellverfahren. Nach seiner Niederlage bei den Gouverneurswahlen in New York 1910 diente Stimson als Kriegsminister unter Taft. Unter seinem Berater Elihu Root reorganisierte er die bereits eingesetzten US-Truppen weiter. Nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde Stimson Teil der Bereitschaftsbewegung.
