John Symon Asher Bruce war ein schottischer Bassist, Singer-Songwriter, Musiker und Komponist. Bekannt wurde er als Co-Leadsänger und Bassist Popularität der britischen Rockband Cream. Nach der Auflösung der Gruppe 1968 verfolgte er eine Solokarriere und spielte auch mit mehreren Bands. In den frühen 1960er Jahren trat Bruce der Graham Bond Organization bei, wo er seinen zukünftigen Bandkollegen Ginger Baker kennenlernte. Nachdem er die Graham Bond Organization verlassen hatte, schloss er sich John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers an, wo er Eric Clapton traf, der auch sein zukünftiger Bandkollege war. Seine Zeit mit der Band war kurz. 1966 Gründung von er Cream mit Leadgitarrist Clapton und Schlagzeuger Baker; er schrieb viele ihrer Lieder zusammen mit dem Dichter/Texter Pete Brown. Nachdem sich die Gruppe Ende der 1960er Jahre auflöste, begann er Soloalben aufzunehmen. Sein erstes Soloalbum Songs for a Tailor, das 1969 veröffentlicht wurde, war ein weltweiter Hit.
