Jan Nisar Akhtar ist ein indischer Dichter von Urdu Ghazals und Nazms und Teil einer Bewegung progressiver Schriftsteller, der auch Lyriker für Bollywood ist. Er ist der Sohn von Muztar Khairabadi und der Urenkel von Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi. Seine Karriere umfasste vier Jahrzehnte, in denen er mit Komponisten wie C. Ramchandra, OP Nayyar, N Dutta und Khayyam zusammenarbeitete und 151 Lieder schrieb. Darunter sind Lieder aus seinem Fluchtfilm, Yasmin von AR Kardar, Aankhon hi Aankhon Mein von CID von Guru Dutt, Yeh dil aur unai nigahon ke saaye von Prem Parbat und Aaja re von Noorie und dem Lied. Sein letztes Lied, Ae Dil-e-naadaan, in Razia Sultan von Kamal Amrohi. Zu seinen poetischen Werken zählen Nazr-e-Butaan, Salaasil, Javidaan, Pichali Pehar, Ghar Angan und Khaak-e-dil. Dann gibt es noch einen Gedichtband, für den er 1976 in Urdu von der Sahitya Akademi, der National Academy of Literature of India, mit dem Sahitya Akademi-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde.
