János Batsányi war ein ungarischer Dichter. 1785 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Werk, ein patriotisches Gedicht "Die Tapferkeit der Magyaren". Im selben Jahr erhielt er eine Anstellung als Angestellter in der Schatzkammer der ungarischen Stadt Kassa und leitete dort zusammen mit zwei anderen ungarischen Patrioten das Magyarische Museum, das 1792 von der Regierung aufgelöst wurde wurde seines Referendariats entzogen und 1794, nachdem er an der Verschwörung von Ignác Martinovics teilgenommen hatte, in das Staatsgefängnis der Festung Kufstein geworfen, wo er zwei Jahre blieb. Nach seiner Freilassung beteiligte er sich erheblich an der Magyar Minerva, einer literarischen Zeitschrift, und ging dann nach Wien, wo er eine Stelle in der Bank erhielt. 1805 heiratete er Gabriella Baumberg, eine bekannte Dichterin aus Wien. Vier Jahre später übersetzte er Napoleons Proklamation an die Ungarn und musste infolge dieser antihabsburgischen Tat nach Paris flüchten.
