Lloyd Chudley Alexander is an American author of more than forty books, mainly fiction novels for children and young adults. During his seven-decade career, Alexander wrote 48 books and his works have been translated into 20 languages. His most famous work is The Chronicles of Prydain, a series of five high-level fiction whose ending, The High King, received the Newbery Medal in 1969 for excellence in American children's literature. He won the US National Book Prize in 1971 and 1982. Alexander grew up in Pennsylvania during the Great Depression. He developed a passion for reading and poetry. He only attended college for a while, believing that nothing else could teach him. He enlisted in the United States Army and became an Intelligence and Counterintelligence Staff Sergeant. He met his wife while stationed in France and studied French literature at the University of Paris.
