Martin Wylde Carter war ein guyanischer Dichter und politischer Aktivist. Carter wird weithin als der größte Dichter Guyanas und als einer der wichtigsten Dichter der Karibik angesehen und ist vor allem für seine Gedichte über Protest, Widerstand und Revolution bekannt. Er spielte eine aktive Rolle in der Politik Guyanas, insbesondere in den Jahren vor der Unabhängigkeit 1966 und in den folgenden Jahren. Er wurde bekanntermaßen im Oktober 1953 in Guyana von der britischen Regierung unter dem Vorwurf der "Verbreitung von Meinungsverschiedenheiten" und erneut im Juni 1954 wegen Teilnahme an einer PPP-Prozession inhaftiert. Kurz nach seiner ersten Haftentlassung veröffentlichte er seinen bekanntesten Gedichtband, Poems of Resistance from British Guyana.
