Nelsan Ellis is an American actor and playwright. He was critically acclaimed for his role as Lafayette Reynolds in the HBO drama True Blood, which won him the International Press Academy's Satellite Award, among other awards. He also played Shinwell Johnson in Elementary from 2016 to 2017 and played several cameos in other TV dramas including Veronica Mars and Without a Trace. In addition to her television work, Ellis appeared in a number of feature films throughout her career. He played the role of Eddie Sweat on Disney's Sports Film Secretariat, Martin Luther King Jr. in Lee Daniels' The Butler, and Bobby Byrd in James Brown's 2014 biopic Get on Up. His last role was in True to the Game, which was released later.
