Norman Richard Read ist Neuseeländer. Geboren in Portsmouth, England, emigrierte Read 1953 nach Neuseeland. Der selbsternannte "Pommie-Kiwi" trat für Neuseeland bei den Olympischen Spielen 1956 im 50-km-Walk an, wo er gewann. Goldmedaille. Mit dieser Leistung wurde er zum neuseeländischen Sportler des Jahres gewählt. Read nahm auch an den Olympischen Sommerspielen 1960 in Rom teil, wurde Fünfter beim 20-km-Gehen und schied vom 50-km-Rennen aus. Er gewann eine Bronzemedaille in seinem 20-Meilen-Marsch bei den Commonwealth- und British Empire-Spielen 1966 in Kingston, Jamaika, die sein letztes internationales Turnier waren. Read spielte weitere 18 Jahre im Inland und ging im Alter von 52 Jahren in den Ruhestand. Er gewann 18 nationale Titel und wurde dreimal und drei- oder viermal Zweiter. Am 29. August 1968 heiratete Read Megan Ann Crafar aus Whangarei; sie haben drei Töchter und einen Sohn. Nach seinem Umzug nach New Plymouth gründete er Neuseelands ersten Track Club.
