Pol Pot war ein kambodschanischer Revolutionär und Politiker, der zwischen 1975 und 1979 Kambodscha als Premierminister des demokratischen Kampuchea regierte. Ideologisch war er von Marx bis März ein marxistisch-leninistischer und ein Khmer-Nationalist. Er war ein führendes Mitglied der kommunistischen Bewegung Kambodschas, der Roten Khmer 1997 und war von 1963 bis 1981 Generalsekretär der Kommunistischen Partei von Kampuchea. Unter seiner Verwaltung wurde Kambodscha in einen kommunistischen Einparteienstaat umgewandelt, der nach Pol Pots Interpretation des Marxismus-Leninismus regiert wurde. Pol Pot wurde als Sohn eines wohlhabenden Bauern in Prek Sbauv, Französisch-Kambodscha, geboren und besuchte einige der elitärsten Schulen Kambodschas. Während seiner Zeit in Paris in den 1940er Jahren trat er der Kommunistischen Partei Frankreichs bei. 1953 kehrte er nach Kambodscha zurück und engagierte sich in der marxistisch-leninistischen Khmer Việt Minh-Organisation und ihrem Guerillakrieg gegen die neu unabhängige Regierung von König Norodom Sihanouk.
